Njogu wa Njoroge is a name synonymous with excellence in Kenya’s vernacular radio landscape.
As a prominent presenter at Kameme FM, which broadcasts in the Kikuyu dialect, Njogu has captured the hearts of many with his captivating voice, impeccable intonation, and mastery of the language.
However, his journey to becoming one of the most celebrated radio presenters in the country is a story of determination, resilience, and an unyielding passion for his craft.
Born in Kigoci, Mathira, Nyeri County, Njogu’s love for radio began at a tender age.
While his parents envisioned him as a veterinary officer, Njogu had other dreams.
As a young boy in class six, he would place a bucket on his head and mimic radio presenters, creating reverberating sounds that made him feel like he was truly on air.
During his school days, Njogu took every opportunity to nurture his talent.
He volunteered to read Swahili articles to his classmates, which helped him build the confidence and poise that would later define his on-air presence.
After completing his high school education, however, life took a different turn. Njogu joined his father in masonry, but his heart was still set on radio.
His break came when he landed a job at Bahasha FM, where he worked alongside well-known figures like Muthoni Kirumba and Gathoni Ng’ang’a.
Unfortunately, the station soon ran into difficulties and closed down, leaving Njogu without a job and struggling to support his wife and child.
Despite the setback, he didn’t give up. With the help of his friend Njoroge Kimani, he ventured into selling second-hand clothes (mitumba) at Ngara market, although this came with its own challenges and feelings of shame when encountering former colleagues.
After seven months of uncertainty, Njogu’s persistence paid off when he secured a position at Kameme FM.
Over the years, he has built a successful career and celebrated a decade at the station.
A year ago, Njogu wa Njoroge was appointed to be the new chairperson of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).
Njoroge was appointed by former Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts CS Ababu Namwamba who also revoked the appointment of the previous board.
