Racheal Mwangi: How My Wedding Led to the Birth of Big Boss Designs, Kenya’s Go-To Men’s Fashion Brand

by admin

Racheal Mwangi, the founder of Big Boss Designs, is a testament to how passion, perseverance, and a little bit of personal experience can turn into a thriving business.

What began as an attempt to source affordable yet stylish wedding outfits  blossomed into a reputable fashion brand, specializing in men’s fashion.

Racheal’s journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t a planned one.

Having worked at a furniture company for nearly a decade, Racheal decided to call it quits in 2009 and try her hand at various businesses.

But it was during her own wedding preparations that she discovered her true calling. While searching for the perfect wedding outfits, she found an abundance of stylish, affordable options abroad.

This realization sparked an idea—why not bring this same convenience and affordability to other couples in Kenya?

After a few initial hurdles, Big Boss Designs was born.

Launched officially in 2014 with a shop along Nairobi’s busy Uhuru Highway, the business was built on the foundation of providing top-quality men’s fashion, including wedding attire, formal suits, and casual wear.

Racheal’s foray into men’s fashion wasn’t without challenges, but it was an area she found intriguing.

“I decided to settle on dressing men as I enjoyed the challenge,” she explains.

With her keen eye for detail, Racheal grew the business by focusing on customer satisfaction and quality, never compromising on either.

Her participation in fashion expos, social media marketing, and networking events helped her carve a niche in the competitive fashion industry.

One of the biggest lessons Racheal has learned over the years is how important it is to understand the personal brand of her clients.

“The way a man dresses defines how he carries himself,” she notes.

Whether it’s choosing the right tie or coordinating a wedding party’s attire, she has mastered the art of enhancing her clients’ confidence through fashion.

But like many entrepreneurs, Racheal’s journey required sacrifice.

To get started, she and her husband sold their car and dipped into their savings to raise KSh 1.2 million. With limited capital, they started small but focused on steady growth.

Today, Big Boss Designs is known for its tailored approach—sourcing high-quality outfits directly from suppliers in Europe and ensuring the perfect fit through in-house alterations.

Despite the competition, Racheal has built a business that thrives on customer referrals and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Her focus on personalized service, quality, and attention to detail has helped Big Boss Designs stand out in the crowded fashion market.

Reflecting on her journey, Racheal has no regrets about leaving formal employment. Though she couldn’t attend university immediately after high school, she later pursued a Chartered Institute of Marketing diploma at the Kenya School of Professional Studies.

As a certified Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) professional with a degree in entrepreneurship, she has also undertaken training under the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women program at USIU, designed to empower female entrepreneurs.

With her husband’s support, she earned her degree from Kenya Methodist University and completed the prestigious training to enhance her entrepreneurial skills.
