Boy Who Earned Wings to Fly Scholarship After Scoring 375 Marks in KCPE Sent Home After Leukemia Diagnosis

Perminus Njenga, a bright young student from Kiambu, was full of hope after achieving an impressive 375 marks in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

His hard work paid off when he was awarded the prestigious Wings to Fly Scholarship, which aimed to support his dream of pursuing secondary education.

However, that dream was cut short after Perminus was diagnosed with leukemia, a serious form of cancer.

Perminus, who hails from a humble family in Kikuyu, reported to secondary school in 2023, but his journey was quickly interrupted.

Just three days after starting school in term two, his teachers called his family to pick him up due to a severe infection. It was then that his condition took a turn for the worse, and further tests revealed that he was suffering from leukemia.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, his mother, Esther Njenga, explained the devastating impact of the diagnosis.

“We went for him and took him to the cancer center for treatment, but he has never gone back to school since then,” she said. The once vibrant student now spends his days at home, bedridden and in pain, as his family struggles to raise the money needed for his treatment.

Despite his promising academic performance, Perminus’ education is on hold as his health takes priority.

The family is now appealing to well-wishers for financial assistance to cover the costs of his medical care, including a crucial PET scan that costs KSh 7,500. Without these funds, Perminus has been unable to access the treatment that could potentially save his life.

The family’s plea for help has reached philanthropists like Ndungu Nyoro, who have rallied around them to seek support from the public. Contributions for Perminus’ treatment can be sent to his mother, Esther Njenga, through Mpesa number 0721371084.
